Questions
Is my file sent anywhere?
No. Your file is read and converted on your device. When the tool opens, it loads its converter from TEMOTO's own server (before you choose a file). Nothing is sent after you choose a file.
Which files can it convert?
Excel files (.xlsx, .xlsm, and .xls of Excel 97-2003) and OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods) become CSV; CSV and TSV files (.csv, .tsv, .txt) become Excel files (.xlsx). The content of the file you choose decides which way.
Are leading zeros and long numbers kept?
Yes. From Excel to CSV, text cells (such as 007) are written as they are, and numbers in a format that adds leading zeros (such as 00000) are written in that form (123 as 00123). Long numbers in the "General" format are written with all their digits, up to 15, whatever the width of the column (4901234567894, even when Excel shows 4.90123E+12). From CSV to Excel, numbers with zeros in front of other digits (such as 007) and whole numbers of 13 digits or more (such as phone numbers and JAN codes) become text cells, exactly as written.
What happens to dates and formulas?
Dates are written with their number format, Japanese eras included. The short date is written as 2024/9/30. A date format that a file gives only by a number, and that Excel shows differently in each language, is written as a plain date such as 2024/9/30. When a format of Excel 2016 or later asks for the first year of an era to be called "gannen", it is written so; an .xls file does not keep that format, so its first year is written as year 1, as Excel shows that .xls file. Formulas are not recalculated: the result saved in the file is written. From CSV to Excel, dates become text cells, exactly as written.
Which encoding should I choose?
To open the file in Excel, choose UTF-8 with BOM. For another system, follow its rules (for example Shift_JIS). If some characters cannot be written in Shift_JIS (such as emoji), the tool shows where they are and saves nothing.
What happens to cells that start with "="?
From CSV to Excel, no cell becomes a formula: text that starts with = + - @ (numbers such as -5.5 aside) becomes a text cell, exactly as written. From Excel to CSV, such cells are written unchanged, and the tool tells you that there are text cells that start with = + - @ or a similar sign. Be careful when you open a CSV file from someone you do not know in a spreadsheet app.
What are the saved files called?
sheet.csv (sheet.tsv with tabs) and sheet.xlsx. The name of your file is never used.
Limits
- Formulas are not recalculated. Formatting, colors, pictures, charts and notes are not part of a CSV file, and the value of merged cells is written in their top-left cell only.
- One CSV file holds one sheet. To convert several sheets, save them one at a time.
- Files with a password, .xls files of Excel 95 or older, Excel binary workbooks (.xlsb) and Numbers files cannot be read.
- Files up to 20 MB, and up to 2,000,000 cells that are not blank (a value or a formula) and 100,000 merged areas in one sheet. The CSV file that the tool makes can be up to 64 MB, and the Excel file up to 64,000,000 cells from A1 to its bottom-right cell. On phones, even smaller files can be slow.
- To use the tool without an internet connection, open it once while you are online: its converter (about 1 MB) is then kept on this device.
