Questions
Are the passwords sent anywhere?
No. The passwords are made on your device. They are not kept in your browser either, and they are gone when you close the page.
How are they made?
One character at a time is chosen with the random numbers that your browser makes for cryptography (crypto.getRandomValues). Each time, every character that can be chosen has the same chance. Each kind that you choose appears at least once, and then the order is shuffled.
What do the bits of the strength mean?
They are a rough guide to how many guesses it takes to find the password: one more bit doubles them. From 60 bits it says fair, from 80 bits strong, and from 100 bits very strong.
Which symbols are used?
These 13: ! # $ % & * + - = ? @ ^ _. They are symbols that most sites accept.
A site does not accept a symbol
Clear "Symbols" and make the password again. A slightly longer password keeps it as strong.
Copying does not work
In browsers inside apps, copying may not work automatically. The tool then selects the password: press and hold it and choose "Copy".
Limits
- The passwords are not kept in the tool either. Before you use one, save it in a password manager or another safe place.
- Each kind of character that you choose appears at least once.
- Some sites have rules about which symbols and lengths they accept.
- We cannot protect against things in your own environment, such as browser extensions.
