Questions
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The counting happens on your device. The text is not kept in your browser either, and it is gone when you close the page.
How many characters is an emoji?
One, as you see it. An emoji made of several characters, such as a family or a flag, is one character too.
Are line breaks counted?
In "Characters", each line break counts as one character. "Without spaces or line breaks" leaves them out.
How are bytes counted?
As the size of the text written in UTF-8 and in Shift_JIS (the form used on Windows), with each line break as one byte (LF). The size with CRLF line breaks, as forms send them, is shown too.
What are characters that cannot be written in Shift_JIS?
Characters that are not in Shift_JIS, such as emoji and some kanji and symbols. The tool shows how many there are, and leaves them out of the Shift_JIS size.
The number of words is not what I expected
Words are the words that your browser finds. For languages written without spaces between words, such as Japanese, take the number as an estimate.
How are sheets of manuscript paper counted?
As if the text were written on Japanese manuscript paper of 20 rows of 20 squares, one character in each square, with each line break moving on to the next row. Rules such as moving punctuation to the row before are not used, so it is an estimate.
Limits
- The number of words and the sheets of manuscript paper are estimates.
- Characters are counted by the rules of your browser, so new emoji and a few other characters can be counted differently in other browsers.
- Very long texts (several MB) take a moment to count.
- We cannot protect against things in your own environment, such as browser extensions.
