Questions
Is my video sent anywhere?
No. Reading the video and making the pictures both happen on your device. Nothing is sent out after you choose a video.
How large are the pictures?
As large as the video. A video taken upright on a phone gives an upright picture (it is turned the right way up).
Can I choose frames one by one exactly?
In browsers that can read video (WebCodecs: Chrome and Edge on computers and Android, Safari 16.4 or later on iPhone and Mac, and others), yes. In other browsers the video player is used, so the place of a frame is approximate; the tool says so then.
PNG or JPEG?
PNG keeps the picture exactly, and its files are larger. JPEG files are smaller, and the picture changes a little. PNG suits pictures you use as they are; JPEG suits pictures you send or save many of.
Can I save many frames at once?
Yes. "Many at once" saves a frame every 1, 2, 5 or 10 seconds, or a number of frames spread evenly over the video, into one ZIP file (frames.zip). Up to 100 pictures at once.
What happens to HDR videos?
Their colors are converted to standard dynamic range (SDR) for the pictures. Some browsers cannot convert them: the colors then look darker and duller, and the tool says so before making.
Does the location or other hidden information stay?
No. The pictures have only the picture of the chosen frame. The location, the date it was taken and the device stored in the video are not included.
Can I use it on a phone?
Yes. Inside apps such as LINE, saving may not work. If so, open the page again in Safari or Chrome. On iPhone and iPad, frames of very large videos (such as 8K) cannot be saved.
Limits
- MP4 and MOV videos (H.264 or HEVC picture) up to 2 GB can be used. WebM, AVI, MKV and other formats cannot.
- In browsers that cannot read video (no WebCodecs), the place of a frame is approximate.
- Up to 100 pictures can be saved at once. ZIP files are up to 500 MB on iPhone and iPad, 1 GB on Android, and 4 GB on computers and other devices (1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes).
- On iPhone and iPad, frames of videos larger than 16.77 million pixels (such as 8K) cannot be saved.
- We cannot protect against things in your own environment, such as browser extensions.
- The work is done on this device, so how long it takes depends on how powerful the device is. On an older phone, it can take several times as long as on a computer.
