Questions

Is my video sent anywhere?

No. Reading the video and converting it both happen on your device. Nothing is sent out after you choose a video.

What is the difference between "Same quality" and "To H.264"?

"Same quality" puts the picture into an MP4 without making it again, so the quality stays the same and it is quick. "To H.264" makes the HEVC (H.265) picture that iPhone videos often have again as H.264, which plays almost everywhere. It takes longer, and the quality changes a little. It works in browsers that can read HEVC videos (such as Safari).

Which one should I choose?

"Same quality" is usually enough. If the converted MP4 does not play on an older computer, a TV or an app, try "To H.264".

Does the location or other hidden information stay?

The location, the date it was taken and the device do not stay. The new video has only the picture and the sound: the information that phones put into videos is not included, and the creation date of the new video is left empty. Information that cameras and other devices write inside the picture data is taken out too. Timecode and captions stored as separate data are not included. With "Same quality", captions and time information written inside the picture data stay. When the sound goes in as it is, the sound data may also carry the name of the app that made it.

What happens to the sound?

AAC sound (almost every iPhone video has it) goes in as it is, without being made again. Uncompressed sound (PCM), common in the MOV files of cameras, often does not play in MP4, so it is made again as AAC. Browsers that cannot make AAC say so; then a video with only the picture is made only when you choose "Make it without sound".

What happens to HDR videos?

With "Same quality" they stay HDR. With "To H.264" their colors are converted to standard dynamic range (SDR). Some browsers cannot convert them: the colors then look darker and duller, and the tool says so before making.

What is the saved file called?

"video.mp4", because the original file name often includes the date the video was taken.

Can I use it on a phone?

Yes. Inside apps such as LINE, saving may not work. If so, open the page again in Safari or Chrome.
