Questions

Are my texts sent anywhere?

No. The comparison happens on your device. The texts and the files you open are not kept in your browser either, and they are gone when you close the page.

How are the texts compared?

Lines are compared first. Then, in the lines that changed, words are compared. Japanese and Chinese are compared character by character. An emoji or a letter with accents is compared as one character.

What if the colors are hard to tell apart?

Lines that were removed have the sign "−", and lines that were added have "+". In a line, removed characters are struck through, and added characters are underlined. Screen readers say "Deleted" and "Added".

Can I ignore spaces or upper and lower case?

Yes. Under "How to compare", you can ignore spaces at line ends, all spaces, upper and lower case, and full-width and half-width forms. The texts shown stay as you entered them.

What about line breaks?

Line break styles (CRLF on Windows, LF elsewhere), and whether the last line ends with a line break, are not compared.

Which files can it open?

Text files (.txt), in UTF-8, Shift_JIS or UTF-16. It cannot open documents such as Word or PDF files: copy their text and paste it instead.

What kind of file is saved?

A text file named "diff.txt", in the format of diff -u (unified diff), in UTF-8 without a BOM, with LF line breaks.

How long can the texts be?

Each text can have up to 200,000 characters. For long texts that changed a lot, the comparison may be made a little simpler. The screen then tells you so.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes. Inside apps such as LINE, saving may not work. If so, open the page again in Safari or Chrome.
