Questions
Is my PDF sent anywhere?
No. Reading the PDF and taking out its images both happen on your device. Nothing is sent out after you choose a file.
Is the quality reduced?
No. JPEG images are saved exactly as they are inside the PDF (they are not drawn again). Other images are saved as PNG, which loses nothing.
What happens to hidden information, such as camera details?
It is removed. Camera details (Exif), details from the programs that made the image (such as XMP), comments and small preview images that a JPEG may carry are removed without changing the image itself. A color profile inside a JPEG is kept. PNG files get no dates or text.
Are there images that cannot be taken out?
Yes. JPEG images in print colors (CMYK), JPEG images of kinds that browsers cannot open (12-bit, lossless and others), images in special colors (such as spot colors), and JPEG 2000, JBIG2 and fax-style images are not taken out, because as image files they would not look the same as in the PDF, or would not open. The screen tells you which kinds were left and how many.
Why are the text and drawings on the pages not taken out?
Text and drawings made of lines (such as charts) are not images, so they cannot be taken out. To save whole pages as pictures, use "PDF to images".
What if the same image is on several pages?
It is taken out once, named after the first page that shows it.
What are the saved files called?
Names like page-3-image-1.jpg: the page number, and which image of that page it is. Two or more are saved together as pdf-images.zip. The original file name is not used.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. On iPhone, ZIP files open in the Files app. Inside apps such as LINE, saving may not work. If so, open the page again in Safari or Chrome.
Limits
- PDFs with a password or other protection cannot be used.
- One PDF can have up to 200 MB and 2,000 pages, and the images taken out can be up to 500 MB in all.
- JPEG images in print colors (CMYK), rare kinds of JPEG (12-bit, lossless and others), images in special colors, and JPEG 2000, JBIG2 and fax-style images cannot be taken out.
- Images written directly into the pages (inline images) cannot be taken out.
- A JPEG image does not keep the transparent parts that it has in the PDF.
- Images are taken out at the size they are stored in the PDF (their pixels), even when a page shows them cropped or turned.
- We cannot protect against things in your own environment, such as browser extensions.
