How to use
Press "Choose a file" and pick one photo. The AI removes its background (this takes a while).
Compare the original with the preview, and check that what you want is kept. Besides transparent, the background can be white, black or any color.
Press "Save" to save it: a transparent background as PNG, a color as PNG or JPEG.
Questions
Is my photo sent anywhere?
No. The AI that removes the background runs on your device too. The first time, the parts of the AI (about 101 MB) are loaded from the TEMOTO site, but nothing is sent out after you choose a photo.
Which photos work well?
Photos where a person, an animal or an object is clear. Of 10 test photos (people, animals, objects and plants), 8 came out clean. Things that blend into the background (such as a potted plant in front of a window) can be removed with it. The AI decides what to keep, so with two things, such as a person on a chair, only one may be kept.
Are the edges of hair clean?
After the AI decides what to keep, the edges of hair and fur follow the full-size picture, and the color of the old background that is mixed into them is reduced. Fine hair in a color like the background may still not be separated cleanly. Check the preview before you save.
Does the removed background stay in the picture?
No. The transparent parts are saved with no color at all (0). The picture has no hidden information either, such as the location or the date.
Can I use large photos?
A photo with a longer side over 4,096 pixels (2,048 pixels on phones, tablets and computers with little memory) is made smaller first, so that the memory is enough. A computer with little memory is one whose browser reports 4 GB or less.
Can I use it on a phone?
Yes, but the AI uses a lot of memory, so it may not work on older phones. It needs WebAssembly SIMD, so use a recent version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox, or Safari 16.4 or later. The first time, the parts of the AI are loaded, so Wi-Fi is a good idea.
Limits
- The AI can remove parts you want to keep, or keep parts of the background. Check the whole preview before you save.
- Fine hair and parts with colors like the background may not be separated cleanly.
- Each time, one photo can be used. A photo with a longer side over 4,096 pixels (2,048 pixels on phones, tablets and computers with little memory) is made smaller first. For moving pictures (GIF, moving WebP or PNG), only the first frame is used.
- One file can be up to 50 MB, and a picture up to 50 megapixels. HEIC (the photo format of iPhones) works only in browsers that can open it (mainly Safari).
- The first time, the parts of the AI (about 101 MB) are loaded. After that, the parts kept on this device are usually used.
- We cannot protect against things in your own environment, such as browser extensions.
